Pope Leo XIV's First Words: A Call for Peace and Unity

On May 8th, Pope Leo XIV delivered his first public remarks as the new pontiff from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. His address called for peace, unity, and universal love—a powerful message directed to Catholics worldwide, particularly those in the United States.

The Pope’s Message of Peace

"Peace be with you!" These first words from Pope Leo XIV echo the importance of Christ’s message of peace and unity. Just like Christ, who gave His life for His people, the Pope wishes for this peace to reach all hearts and families, everywhere in the world. He emphasizes a humble and preserving peace that comes from God, a peace without condition or limit.

The Holy Father also mentioned the need to build bridges, engage in dialogue, and support each other in the Christian faith, in a constant search for justice and peace. He thanked his Cardinal brothers for choosing him to succeed as the leader of the Church and encouraged all Catholics to continue following Christ, proclaiming His Gospel, and being missionaries of love.

A Message for All: Solidarity and Hope

The Pope highlighted that the mission of the Church must be missionary, open to all, and attentive to the most vulnerable. A special mention was made of the city of Rome, emphasizing the importance of being a synodal Church, close to the suffering and marginalized, always ready to open its arms to welcome those in need.

Pope Leo XIV also extended a special greeting to his beloved diocese of Chiclayo, Peru, where the faithful continue to embody Christian love and solidarity. He also invited Catholics worldwide to pray for peace and for the Church’s mission, with the intercession of Our Lady of Pompeii, invoked on this day.

A Call for Reflection and Action

Pope Leo XIV's first words remind us of the urgent need for peace and charity. In a world often destabilized by conflict and division, this speech provided a message of comfort, solidarity, and faith. Let these words guide us in our mission to bring God’s love to the world and work towards peace.
